Dimension 11 of 11
D11: Social Norms
How strictly are the unwritten rules enforced, and how much is a stranger forgiven? Understand it, and âyou just donât do that hereâ starts to make sense.
What are Social Norms?
Social Norms describes how strong a societyâs norms are and how much it tolerates deviation. It sits above the other ten Dimensions, shaping how strictly any of them is enforced. Neither end is better.
Two ends of one spectrum
Tight
Many strong norms and a low tolerance of deviant behavior. Rules are clear, widely shared, and enforced, socially if not legally.
Loose
Weak norms and a high tolerance of deviant behavior. There is more room for individual variation without social sanction.
Three ways to fit in
Tight and Loose show up in public behavior, dress, and how mistakes are handled. Here are three examples.
South Asia and Confucian Asia: tight
Both sit at the Tight end, with clear shared expectations for how to behave.
Eastern Europe: loose
Sits at the Loose end, with more tolerance for individual variation.
Why it differs
Gelfandâs 2011 study of 33 nations links tightness to a history of threat, like crowding, scarcity, disaster, and invasion.
Three things to keep in mind
1. Tightness is a survival tool
Gelfand et al. (2011) link tight norms to a history of ecological and human threat. Treat strict norms as a reasoned response, not rigidity.
2. It colors every other Dimension
Tight cultures enforce all ten other preferences more strictly. Check the setting before you assume the rule is flexible.
3. Strangers get different grace
Loose cultures forgive a newcomerâs slip more easily than tight ones do. In a tight culture, watch first and match the room.
Social Norms, from the pages and the screen
Tight feels like
Ma Ingalls (Little House on the Prairie), with a clear way to do everything.
Loose feels like
Luna Lovegood (Harry Potter), free to be entirely herself.
Loose feels like
Huck Finn (Huckleberry Finn), who steps outside the townâs rules.
